Rustamyants Aram Borisovich (13.04.1970, Rostov-on-Don) is a pianist, an educator, one of the organizers of children’s jazz education in Rostov-on-Don, a laureate of the international jazz contests, an arranger, Director General of MBEI ACE “CSA “K. Nazaretov ECA”, a juryman at the International Contest of Young Jazz Performers, a creative director of international jazz festivals, Honored Worker of the All-Russian Musical Association (2001).

He took a great interest in jazz at the age of 14, when he happened to visit the International Festival of Big Jazz Orchestras held by Kim Nazaretov in Rostov-on-Don. He made his jazz musician’s début in 1988 at the Tula Festival as a member of Aram Rustamyants and Evgeny Gnezdilov’s Quintet.

In 1989 he graduated from the Variety and Jazz Department of RCA, in 1994 – from the Variety and Jazz Music Faculty of RSC (Academy) named after S. V. Rachmaninoff, in 1998 – from the trainee assistantship on the class of ensemble.

Since 1987 he has worked in various variety and jazz organizations: an artist of the variety orchestra in the House of Culture “Energetik” (1987-1988), a music director of the variety orchestra in the regional Pioneer Palace (1988-1991). He worked in Viktor Budarin’s “Don-Band” for 4 years (in 1993 he performed at the jazz festivals in Novosibirsk and Saint Petersburg); worked in the position of a concertmaster at the Variety and Jazz Music Faculty of S. V. Rachmaninoff Rostov State Conservatory (Academy) (1994-1995).

Since 1995 he has been a principal and a teacher in K. Nazaretov CJS, since 2001 –  Director General of RCMC named after K. Nazaretov (nowadays renamed MBEI ACE “CSA “K. Nazaretov ECA”).

As a member of an ensemble that in 1998 had adopted a name  New-Centropezn Jazz Quartet, he participated in international contests:

  • “Euro-Jazz-94” (Belgium) – the 5th place and a special prize “Most promising young band”.
  • XIV European Contest of Young Jazz Bands in Leverkusen (1995, Germany) – Grand Prize.
  • XXII International Contest in Gecko (1998, Spain) – “Best Band in the Opinion of the Audience”.

He has been working in the school since 1995. His pupils regularly take winning places at the international contests in Russia (Saint Petersburg, Rostov-on-Don) and the near abroad (Ukraine), perform at the jazz festivals in Germany, Scotland, Ukraine, Russia. His graduates continued their professional education in Russia (Mikhail Balanov, RSC (Academy) named after S. V. Rachmaninoff), in the Netherlands (Liya Grigoryan, Amsterdam Conservatory)…

As a member of New Centropezn Quartet, he constantly appears at the international jazz festivals of the near and far abroad. As a percussion performer of Kim Nazaretov’s jazz orchestra –where the quarter has been a rhythm section since 2001- he has participated in various international projects. The most important of them is  East West European Jazz Orchestra  which came into being (since 2004) thanks to  the long-term relations between twin cities Rostov-on-Don and Dortmund and which united musicians from Russia, Germany, the Czech Republic, Indonesia, the USA, France, Serbia, the Netherlands.

In 2011 A. B. Rustamyants became a laureate at the All-Russian Contest “Best teacher of a children’s school of arts in Russia”.
